The first day home was supposed to be the beginning of something gentle… but for baby monkey Cici, it felt like another unknown chapter she wasn’t ready to trust.
From the moment she arrived, her tiny body stayed tense. Her wide eyes scanned every corner of the room, as if she was searching for something—or someone—she had lost. Every small sound made her flinch. A door closing, footsteps nearby, even the rustle of fabric… everything felt too big, too loud, too unfamiliar for her fragile heart.
Cici didn’t explore like you might expect a baby to. Instead, she clung. The moment I reached out, her little hands grabbed onto my shirt and refused to let go. It wasn’t just a grip—it was a silent plea. “Don’t leave me too.” You could feel it in the way her fingers tightened whenever I shifted even slightly.
Food didn’t excite her. Toys didn’t distract her. Comfort, for her, wasn’t about things—it was about presence. She didn’t want to be entertained… she wanted to feel safe. And safety, to her, meant someone staying.
There were moments she would look up, her eyes soft but filled with confusion and fear. As if she was trying to understand why everything had changed. As if she was still waiting for the one she lost to come back and take her away from all this unfamiliar warmth.
When I tried to set her down gently, even just for a second, panic took over. She cried—not loudly, but deeply. The kind of cry that comes from somewhere heavy, somewhere that remembers loss. So I picked her up again, holding her close, letting her feel that she wasn’t alone.
Hours passed like that. Quiet reassurance. Soft whispers. Slow movements. Letting her adjust at her own pace. Trust isn’t something you can give all at once—it has to grow, especially in a heart that’s been broken so early.
By the time the day faded into night, Cici finally began to relax. Still holding on, still unsure… but a little less afraid. She fell asleep in my arms, her grip loosening just slightly, her breathing soft and steady.
It wasn’t a perfect first day. There was fear, sadness, and uncertainty. But there was also something else… the very beginning of trust.
And sometimes, that’s the most important first step of all. 🐒💔
